The social inclusion project

The social inclusion project was commissioned by Team Hackney, the Borough’s local strategic partnership (LSP), to give advice and guidance to small voluntary sector organisations’ affected by the extension of the DDA 1995 “Reasonable adjustment clause duties to employers with 15 or less employees.

The changes were introduced with effect from the 1st of October 2004, employers with or fewer than 15 employees will no longer be exempted from the DDA 1995 statutory duty not to discriminate people with physical disabilities. This meant that changes to the physical features of the premises, procedures and policies should be made in order that people with disabilities could access the services as any able bodied person.

To ensure that the impact of this amendment is understood Team Hackney commissioned the social inclusion project to support small voluntary sector organisations with 15 or fewer employees to comply with this new statutory requirement.

The programme offered the following services to the beneficiaries;

  • Disability equality training which included the DDA briefing
  • A subsidised disability access audit for small businesses
  • Assistance to some of the beneficiaries to apply for the “Two Tick” disability symbol which demonstrated their commitment to invite any prospective job applicant to fill a vacancy. It also demonstrates that the employer is committed to making the necessary changes required in to accommodate employees with physical disabilities.
