New Partnership for Unemployed Disabled People

NEWPUD is a partnership consisting of disabled people on one hand, and organisations of and for disabled people, employers and public service providers on the other. The partnership will assist disabled people in finding secure employment or in establishing their own businesses.

The project has three main objectives. Firstly, to provide training, work placement and employment opportunities for disabled people in partnership with local employers.

Secondly, to work closely with our training providers and partners in the voluntary sector to create a fully integrated support service for disabled people seeking employment.

Thirdly, to assist partners to meet their legal obligations under the Disability Discrimination Act 1995 by offering access audits and advice on how to avoid inadvertent discrimination against disabled people.

We established NEWPUD in response to key recommendations that came out of our recent consultation with our partners. The finding of that consultation is summarised in page& ..

NEWPUD builds on the success of an existing training programme organised through Disability Hackney s Access Project (HAAP) (see page& ). includes three training courses for unemployed disabled people with a reasonable level of literacy. Trainees can gain accreditation as Disability Access Auditors, Disability Equality Trainers and Disability This programme Rights Advocates. All these skills are in demand to meet the requirements of the Disability Discrimination Act.

However, the success of the HAAP Project has uncovered a need for a less specialised train-for-work programme for long-term unemployed disabled people with literacy problems and lower levels of self-esteem and self-confidence.

In this connection, Disability Hackney is seeking to partner with established retailers, e.g. supermarkets, to provide work experience and jobs as shelf-stackers, cashiers etc. for trainees who have successfully completed their customer service training.

These retail partners in NEWPUD will benefit from free advice and guidance on how best to improve disabled access to their services as stipulated in the Disability Discrimination Act 1995.

NEWPUD is a Pan-London project targeting to recruit disabled people (as trainees) and employers to sign-up to the project. If you are disabled, unemployed or looking for an opportunity to set up your own business, please contact Disability Hackney for support and guidance.

NEWPUD is funded by the European Social Fund (ESF) through Jobcentre Plus and Learning + Skill Council (LSC).
