The Hackney Access Action Project (HAAP) is a subgroup of Disability Hackney. We want to make Hackney a more accessible place for disabled people to live and work. To achieve this we work with local authorities, architects, surveyors, employers and service providers. Our areas of interest include leisure facilities, public buildings and services, educational establishments, shops, offices, housing and transport.
What We Wish to Achieve
Our aim is to encourage reasonable adjustments to premises, policies and procedures, and the way services are provided, to ensure they are not unreasonably difficult for disabled people to use. That includes the reduction or removal of any physical features that cause substantial disadvantage to a disabled person.
How the Project Began
HAAP was jointly established as a community access group in 1999 by Hackney Council for Voluntary Services (HCVS) and Disability Hackney. The group provides an effective voice for disabled people on local access issues, and has subsequently flourished as an important part of Disability Hackney, the local disability umbrella organisation.
An Invitation to Join Us
HAAP membership is open to any disabled person or able-bodied people, particularly professional, who are living or working in Hackney and have interest in disability access issues. If you would like to find out more about the benefits of becoming a member, please contact Disability Hackney.
